Battersea Hospitals
Under Construction
St. John's Hospital. St. John's Hill . The oldest building is of 1868, architect Beeston Son & Brereton, as infirmary and casual wards to Wandsworth & Clapham Union Workhouse that was to the west. Closed about 1972? Now converted to apartments.
Anti-Vivisection Hospital, Battersea General
Hospital; Prince of Wales Road. Incorporated 1899, opened June
1902, closed about 1969? demolished 1971. The hospital was on the
corner of Albert Bridge Road and Prince of Wales Drive.
Originally a private residence was converted into a hospital in
1902 largely financed by Lady Headley.
From Herbert Fry's Royal Guide to the London
Charities, 1917 "Anti-Vivisection Hospital, Battersea
General Hospital (Incorporated); 1899, opened June 1902; Prince
of Wales Road, Battersea Park, London, S.W.; For the relief of
human suffering by physicians and surgeons who are opposed to
vivisection. General Hospital for the needy and deserving. Free
admission and attendance by Governor's letter."
The Anti-Vivisection movement had strong support in Battersea and
the story of the Brown Dog statue
that once stood in the Latchmere Road Estate, 1906 to1910 is very
much part of it.
The National Anti-Vivisection
Society is still active.
Bolingbroke Hospital, Bolingbroke Grove, is
now part of St George's
Healthcare NHS Trust
